Explained in 30 seconds

  • Denim goes live on Base mainnet on Nov. 5, 2026 at 18:00 UTC; it has run on the Base Sepolia testnet since Oct. 21.
  • Base will produce five canonical 200ms blocks per second instead of one block every 2 seconds, so block numbers move 10 times faster.
  • Flashblocks streams and the pending tag stop at activation; node operators must run Base v1.5.1 and apps must migrate.

Quick answer: The Base Denim upgrade activates on Base mainnet on Nov. 5, 2026 at 18:00 UTC, according to Base’s v1.5.1 release notes. It replaces 2-second blocks with five full 200ms blocks per second and switches off Flashblocks, so apps that read Flashblocks or count blocks as time must update first.

The Base Denim upgrade is set to make Coinbase’s Ethereum layer 2 one of the fastest chains by block time. Base says it will switch from one block every 2 seconds to five full blocks every second on mainnet on Nov. 5, 2026, at 18:00 UTC.

That speed comes with a deadline. Flashblocks, the sub-second preview feed many trading apps use today, will be switched off at the same moment, so builders have less than a week to migrate.

When does the Base Denim upgrade go live?

Base published node release v1.5.1 on GitHub on Oct. 22, 2026. The notes say mainnet operators “must upgrade to this release by November 5 at 18:00:00 UTC for the Denim hardfork.”

Denim is already running on the Base Sepolia testnet. The Denim overview in the Base docs lists Sepolia as live since Oct. 21, 2026. That gave developers about two weeks of test time before mainnet.

What are 200ms native blocks on Base?

Today, Base makes one block every 2 seconds. Flashblocks fill the gap by sending partial updates while that single block is being built.

Denim drops that design. According to the Base 200ms blocks page, the sequencer will build “five complete canonical blocks per second.” Each block has its own number, hash, state root and receipts, and it moves through the normal unsafe, safe and finalized stages.

In simple terms, the fast confirmation users already see in wallets becomes a real block on the chain, not a preview.

What is BaseTime?

Ethereum block timestamps count whole seconds, so five blocks in one second would share a timestamp. Denim adds a BaseTime predeploy that records the millisecond part of each block. Contracts can read it, while block.timestamp stays in seconds for compatibility.

RPC responses also gain optional timestampMs and blockTimestampMs fields. The usual timestamp field does not change.

What changes for users and traders?

For most people holding ETH or stablecoins on Base, nothing needs to be done. Wallets and bridges run by large teams should handle the switch on their side.

The visible change should be speed. A full block every 200ms means swaps, payments and in-app actions confirm on-chain faster, which matters for onchain trading and payment apps. It also adds to Base’s push into payments after Coinbase’s Q3 2026 results highlighted stablecoin growth.

What must builders and node operators do before Nov. 5?

This is where the risk sits. Base lists three main jobs:

  • Upgrade nodes. Operators must run Base v1.5.1 before 18:00 UTC on Nov. 5, 2026.
  • Leave Flashblocks. The migration guide says newFlashblocks subscriptions should move to newHeads, and calls that use the "pending" tag should read the latest canonical block instead.
  • Check block-count logic. Block numbers will rise 10 times faster. Base warns that a contract which treats a number of blocks as a length of time will see that period shrink to one tenth after activation.

The last point is serious for immutable contracts. Base notes that block-count constants in non-upgradeable code “cannot be retuned after activation.” Vesting, lockups, auctions and voting periods measured in blocks are the obvious places to check.

Denim also tightens rules for B20 tokens, Base’s built-in token standard. Transfers and mints to a token’s own address will revert, and policies can now be inverted with a NOT flag.

What does Denim mean for the market?

Base has no native token, so there is no direct price trade. The upgrade matters more for activity. Faster blocks can attract trading apps and payment flows that today choose Solana or other fast chains.

The main short-term risk is breakage. Apps that miss the Flashblocks shutdown or the block-time change could show stale data or misbehave on Nov. 5. Users of smaller Base apps should watch for team notices that week. Security has been in focus this month, with Ethereum client patches and the Binance hack, so cautious users may avoid large moves near activation. You can follow ETH on our Ethereum price page.

Base Denim Upgrade FAQ

When does the Base Denim upgrade happen?

Denim activates on Base mainnet on Nov. 5, 2026, at 18:00 UTC, per Base’s v1.5.1 release notes on GitHub. It has been live on the Base Sepolia testnet since Oct. 21, 2026.

Do I need to do anything with my funds on Base?

No action is required for regular users holding ETH or tokens on Base. The upgrade changes how blocks are produced, not balances. Watch for notices from smaller apps you use.

Is Base getting rid of Flashblocks?

Yes. Base says Flashblocks streams and pending-state RPC access stop when Denim activates. Apps must move to canonical block streams such as newHeads.

How fast will Base blocks be after Denim?

Base will produce one full block every 200 milliseconds, or five blocks per second. That is 10 times more blocks than the current 2-second block time.
