Quick answer: Coinbase Q3 earnings showed net income of $718.7 million, or $2.51 per diluted share, reported on Oct. 29, 2026. However, total revenue fell to $1.22 billion from $1.87 billion, and transaction revenue dropped 44% to $590.2 million. Gains on its own crypto holdings drove the profit, per its 10-Q, Reuters and CNBC.
Coinbase Q3 earnings look strong at first glance, with net income of $718.7 million, or $2.51 per diluted share. However, the core business shrank: total revenue fell 35% to $1.22 billion, and trading revenue dropped 44% from a year earlier.
So the headline profit tells you more about bitcoin’s price than about how much customers traded. The figures come from the company’s Form 10-Q, filed on Oct. 29, 2026.
What happened in Coinbase Q3 earnings
Coinbase returned to profit after three straight quarterly losses, Reuters reported. A year ago, it earned $432.6 million in the same quarter.
Yet the source of the profit matters most. The 10-Q shows $715.0 million of net gains on crypto assets held for investment. By contrast, operating income was only $61.7 million, down from $480.5 million a year earlier.
In other words, Coinbase made most of its quarterly profit because the coins on its balance sheet rose in value. Bitcoin climbed roughly 40% during the quarter, according to CNBC and Strategy’s own results.
Meanwhile, revenue missed. CNBC said revenue of $1.20 billion trailed the $1.233 billion that analysts polled by LSEG expected. The shares fell 3.3% after the bell, per Reuters.
Why the trading slump in Coinbase Q3 earnings matters
Even so, trading fees are still Coinbase’s biggest revenue line. In Q3, total transaction revenue fell to $590.2 million from $1.05 billion.
Notably, the drop was steepest with retail users. Consumer transaction revenue fell to $450.1 million from $843.5 million. The 10-Q links this to a 59% fall in consumer spot trading volume.
Likewise, user numbers point the same way. Monthly transacting users fell to 7.4 million from 9.3 million a year earlier. Coinbase blames weaker market conditions and, therefore, fewer people trading.
This matters beyond one company. Coinbase is the largest US exchange, so its retail numbers are a rough gauge of how active everyday crypto buyers are. For now, that gauge says many of them have stepped back.

The new revenue lines filling the gap
Still, the quarter was not only bad news. Coinbase is trying to rely less on spot trading, and some of that work is showing.
First, prediction markets. Coinbase launched them in February, and since then annualized revenue passed $200 million in Q3, according to CNBC and the earnings call. The number of traders on those markets rose 60% from Q2. We covered the wider push in our report on 5-minute crypto prediction markets.
Second, subscription and services revenue reached $570.2 million. As a result, that was 49% of net revenue, up from 41% a year earlier. Stablecoin revenue, mostly tied to USDC, held at $306.9 million. Also, the 10-Q says average USDC held in Coinbase products hit an all-time high.
On the other hand, blockchain rewards from staking fell 54% to $85.7 million. Lower token prices and activity weighed on that line too.
Finally, costs came down. Total operating expenses fell about 17% to $1.15 billion, Reuters reported. A restructuring plan announced in May helped, according to the filing.
Data and context: where the market stands now
However, the market backdrop has worsened since the quarter closed. At 10:55 UTC on Oct. 30, 2026, bitcoin traded at $77,602, down 3.3% in 24 hours, per CoinGecko. Similarly, ether was at $2,243.87, down 3.6%.
That fall followed the Binance breach, which we tracked in our report on the North Korea link. As a result, the crypto gains that lifted Coinbase in Q3 may shrink in Q4 if prices stay lower.
For context, here are the key Q3 figures from the 10-Q:
| Metric | Q3 2025 | Q3 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $1.87B | $1.22B |
| Transaction revenue | $1.05B | $590.2M |
| Subscription and services | $716.6M | $570.2M |
| Net income | $432.6M | $718.7M |
| Monthly transacting users | 9.3M | 7.4M |
What to watch after Coinbase Q3 earnings
So far, the early Q4 numbers are soft. Coinbase said transaction revenue through Oct. 25 was about $165 million, and it warned against extrapolating that figure, per its earnings presentation. For subscription and services, meanwhile, it guided to $550 million to $630 million.
Here is what to watch over the coming weeks:
- Retail volume. If spot trading stays weak, fees will keep falling.
- Prediction markets. This is now Coinbase’s fastest-growing new product, so its growth rate matters.
- USDC balances. Higher stablecoin balances support steady interest-based revenue.
- Bitcoin’s price. A lower close on Dec. 31 would cut the crypto gains that drove Q3 profit.
