About Bitcoin (BTC)
Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency: a peer-to-peer digital cash system described in a 2008 white paper by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto and launched in January 2009. No company or government issues it. Instead, thousands of independent nodes check every transaction against the same rules, and miners compete to add new blocks roughly every ten minutes using proof of work.
What makes BTC unusual is its fixed monetary policy. The protocol caps supply at 21 million coins, and the reward miners receive for each block halves every 210,000 blocks, about once every four years. The most recent halving, in April 2024, cut the block reward to 3.125 BTC. In other words, most coins already exist, so new supply now grows slowly.
Bitcoin trades around the clock on exchanges worldwide, so there is no single official price. The figure on this page is a volume-weighted average from CoinGecko, with Binance as a backup, and it refreshes every minute. Since January 2024, US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs have also given traditional investors access, and their daily flows are now one of the signals the market watches most closely.
What moves the Bitcoin price?
- Demand from funds and companies: ETF inflows and outflows and corporate treasury buying.
- Macro conditions: interest-rate expectations, the US dollar and overall risk appetite.
- Supply events: halvings, miner selling and large movements from long-dormant wallets.
- Regulation and market structure: rules for exchanges, custody and stablecoins in major economies.
- Leverage: crowded futures positions can force liquidations that exaggerate moves in either direction.
Bitcoin price FAQ
Why is the Bitcoin price different on each exchange?
Each exchange has its own order book, fees and local demand, so prices can differ slightly. Arbitrage traders keep the gaps small. This page shows an aggregated market price from CoinGecko rather than one venue’s quote.
How often is the BTC price on this page updated?
The live price card refreshes about every 60 seconds while the page is open. The key stats table is a snapshot that refreshes about every 15 minutes, and its timestamp is shown below the table.
How many bitcoins will ever exist?
At most 21 million. The issuance schedule is written into the protocol, and the last fractions of a coin are expected to be mined around the year 2140.
What is a Bitcoin halving?
A halving cuts the number of new bitcoins paid to miners for each block in half. It happens every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years, and slows the rate at which new supply enters the market.
Is Bitcoin a good investment?
CryptoVank does not give investment advice. Bitcoin has historically been very volatile and has seen large drawdowns. Only risk money you can afford to lose, and consider speaking to a licensed adviser.
