About XRP
XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), an open-source blockchain launched in 2012 by David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto. Their company later became Ripple. The XRPL does not use mining or staking. Instead, a set of trusted validators runs a consensus protocol that settles transactions in a few seconds for a tiny fee.
The ledger created all 100 billion XRP at launch, so no more can be issued. Ripple received a large share and placed most of its holdings in on-ledger escrow, which releases up to 1 billion XRP each month; unused XRP returns to escrow. Every transaction fee also destroys a small amount of XRP, so total supply slowly declines.
Today, people use XRP for cross-border payments, for its built-in decentralized exchange and for tokenized assets on the XRPL. From December 2020, the price also reacted strongly to the US SEC’s lawsuit against Ripple. A July 2023 ruling found that exchange sales of XRP were not securities offerings, and the case ended in 2025.

XRP price FAQ
Is XRP the same as Ripple?
No. Ripple is a company. XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, which anyone can use. Ripple holds a large amount of XRP and builds products that use it, but it does not control the ledger alone.
How many XRP are there?
The ledger created 100 billion XRP at launch, and no new XRP can be issued. Ripple’s escrow locks part of the supply, and every transaction burns a little.
Where does this page get the XRP price?
The price comes from CoinGecko’s aggregated market data (asset id “ripple”), with Binance’s XRP/USDT pair as a fallback. It refreshes about every 60 seconds.
Why does XRP react to legal news?
For years, however, the SEC case created uncertainty about whether US platforms could list XRP. Regulatory decisions still affect which exchanges and funds can offer it.
Is XRP a good investment?
CryptoVank does not give investment advice. XRP is volatile. Only risk money you can afford to lose.
