Quick answer: Yes. Liquid Network LBTC is fully backed again: reserves held 4,268.95 BTC against 4,268.95 LBTC in circulation after a final 250 BTC transfer on Nov. 2, 2026, per mempool data cited by The Defiant. The Liquid Federation confirmed 1:1 backing on X at 00:03 UTC on Nov. 3.
Every Liquid Network LBTC token has a real bitcoin behind it again. A final 250 BTC transfer on Nov. 2, 2026 lifted the sidechain’s reserves to 4,268.95 BTC, matching the 4,268.95 LBTC in circulation, The Defiant reported from mempool’s Liquid explorer data.
The Liquid Federation confirmed it on X at 00:03 UTC on Nov. 3, saying reserves were “fully restored, reestablishing 1:1 BTC backing for all LBTC.” That closes a hole of about 602 BTC, worth roughly $46 million at today’s price, left by the Sept. 6 exploit.
What happened to Liquid Network LBTC in September?
Liquid is a bitcoin sidechain run by a federation of companies. In turn, its LBTC token is meant to stand for bitcoin locked in the federation’s reserve wallet.
On Sept. 6, 2026 at 13:53 UTC, an attacker exploited a bug in the rangeproof verification cache of Elements, the software behind Liquid, according to Blockstream’s incident assessment. As a result, one invalid transaction created about 4,000 LBTC with nothing behind it.
The attacker then pegged that LBTC out through SideSwap and received about 4,000 real BTC. Consequently, reserves fell from about 4,205 BTC to 197 BTC before Blockstream halted the bridge nodes at 18:26 UTC.
Did the attacker give the bitcoin back?
Mostly, yes. After several rounds of talks, the attacker returned 3,400 BTC on Sept. 7 at 16:09 UTC, Blockstream said. That left about 602 BTC outstanding. Blockstream shipped a fixed release, Elements v23.3.4, on Sept. 9. Meanwhile, other Liquid assets, such as USDT on Liquid, were not affected, though they were frozen while the network was paused.
How did the Liquid Network LBTC reserve close its 600 BTC gap?
Overall, the repair came in small steps. Crypto Briefing reported that Blockstream pledged to cover the shortfall itself rather than pass losses to users. According to posts from the federation and SideSwap, the transfers into the federation wallet were:
- Oct. 27: a 2.5 BTC test transaction, leaving about 600 BTC to go.
- Oct. 28: 50 BTC, leaving about 550 BTC.
- Nov. 2: 300 BTC, lifting backing to about 94.14%.
- Nov. 2: a final 250 BTC, confirmed in Bitcoin block 974,307.

At about $76,749 per bitcoin on CoinGecko at 02:56 UTC on Nov. 3, the restored reserve is worth roughly $327.6 million. You can follow the coin on our live bitcoin price page.
Can Liquid Network LBTC holders withdraw to bitcoin now?
Partly. Since late October, users can swap BTC and LBTC at 1:1 through providers such as AQUA, Bull Bitcoin and SideSwap, the federation said in its Oct. 27 update. For most people, therefore, that is the practical way out.
Direct federation peg-outs are a different matter. Under the staged recovery plan published Oct. 20, full 1:1 backing was the precondition for a controlled restart of peg-outs for holders of peg-out authorization keys. However, the Nov. 2 announcement did not say those controls were lifted. Similarly, it did not say the independent audit was complete.
What does this mean for bitcoin sidechains and bridges?
The episode is a reminder that wrapped or bridged bitcoin is only as good as its reserve and its code. Crypto has seen a run of large breaches lately, from the $6.3 billion Binance hack to the Mercado Bitcoin incident and the BTCPay Server hot wallet attack.
Even so, Liquid’s case ended better than most. Users were made whole on paper, most coins came back, and the gap was covered without a haircut. Still, the trust question now shifts to the next steps. Watch three things:
- An announcement that normal federation peg-outs have resumed.
- The release of the independent security audit.
- Public reserve tracking through block explorers, which the federation has promised.
Liquid Network LBTC FAQ
Is LBTC fully backed by bitcoin again?
Yes. As of about 00:08 UTC on Nov. 3, 2026, mempool’s Liquid explorer showed 4,268.95 BTC in reserves against 4,268.95 LBTC in circulation, per The Defiant. The Liquid Federation confirmed 1:1 backing on X the same night.
How much bitcoin was stolen from Liquid?
About 4,000 BTC left Liquid’s reserves on Sept. 6, 2026, after an Elements software bug let an attacker create unbacked LBTC and peg it out, Blockstream said. The attacker returned 3,400 BTC on Sept. 7, leaving about 602 BTC missing.
Who covered Liquid’s missing bitcoin?
Blockstream pledged to cover the roughly 600 BTC shortfall itself, Crypto Briefing reported. The gap closed through transfers of 2.5 BTC, 50 BTC, 300 BTC and 250 BTC between Oct. 27 and Nov. 2, 2026.
Can I peg out LBTC to bitcoin directly?
Not freely yet. Swaps at 1:1 through providers such as AQUA, Bull Bitcoin and SideSwap work, but direct federation peg-outs remained under enhanced controls as of Nov. 3, 2026, pending security work and an independent audit.
