Explained in 30 seconds

  • Morgan Stanley now targets Q1 2027 to support tokenized equities on its alternative trading system, later than the H2 2026 plan shared in March.
  • Amy Oldenburg says the product and client demand are missing; she is watching DTCC's October tokenization launch and the GENIUS Act, which takes effect in January.
  • Tokenized stocks hold about $3.34 billion onchain per RWA.xyz, up 17% in 30 days, so banks are joining a small but fast-growing market.

Quick answer: Morgan Stanley tokenized equities support on its alternative trading system is now expected in Q1 2027, not the second half of 2026. Digital asset strategy head Amy Oldenburg told The Block on Oct. 12, 2026, that the bank is still building and that tradable products and client demand are not there yet.

Morgan Stanley tokenized equities are coming later than planned. Amy Oldenburg, the bank’s head of digital asset strategy, told The Block at Token2049 that Q1 2027 is now the realistic window for supporting them on its alternative trading system (ATS). In March, she had pointed to the second half of 2026.

The delay is not about a broken system. In her words, the bank needs product before it can support it, and “the client demand really isn’t there because the product doesn’t exist.”

What did Morgan Stanley say about tokenized equities?

Oldenburg said her team is actively building the infrastructure. An ATS matches buy and sell orders away from public exchanges such as Nasdaq. According to crypto.news, the venue in question is Trajectory Cross, which already handles stocks, ETFs and American depositary receipts. Tokenized shares would be one more format on the same rails, not a new crypto exchange.

She also named two milestones the bank is watching. The first is the DTCC tokenization service, due to launch at the end of October. The second is the GENIUS Act stablecoin law, which takes effect in January. She added that, with the Clarity Act not passing, institutions still need firmer answers on Fed permissibility and other undefined areas.

Morgan Stanley is not idle in the meantime. It is building its own wallet infrastructure, designed so clients can hold tokenized products without handling the technical layer themselves. It also runs a new Digital Asset Lab that tests blockchain tools before anything reaches production. Both The Block and crypto.news report a conditional OCC approval this year for a Morgan Stanley digital trust to custody or stake digital assets.

Why the Morgan Stanley tokenized equities delay matters

At first glance, a one-quarter slip looks like bad news for tokenization. We read it differently. Oldenburg is describing a chicken-and-egg problem, not a lack of interest. Banks will not list tokenized shares that nobody issues. Issuers, in turn, wait for venues and settlement rails that big clients trust.

That is why DTCC matters more than any single bank’s calendar. DTCC’s July 15 release said more than 30 firms used tokenized DTC-held securities in live production trades. It framed that as the step before an October 2026 launch. The Block’s tokenization briefing adds that an SEC no-action letter from Dec. 11, 2025, lets DTC run the service for three years. It covers Russell 1000 stocks, ETFs tracking major indexes and Treasuries.

In other words, the “product” Oldenburg is waiting for is now arriving through the main US custody utility. As a result, a Q1 2027 target leaves room to plug into it instead of building around it. For context, she still expects tokenized real-world assets to reach $3 trillion to $10 trillion by 2030, “without question.” That is her forecast, not a measured figure.

Tokenized stocks today: size, leaders and crypto prices

The onchain market Wall Street wants to join is still small. As of 14:20 UTC on Oct. 12, 2026, RWA.xyz showed $3.34 billion in distributed tokenized stocks. That was up 16.99% from 30 days earlier. Holders stood at 4.35 million, up 23.32%. However, monthly transfer volume fell 71.99% to $9.88 billion, so activity has cooled even as holdings grew.

Concentration is high. Ondo ($929.6 million), bStocks ($923.4 million), xStocks ($593.4 million) and Securitize ($426.3 million) together hold about 86% of the total. Robinhood ranks sixth with $136.4 million. The IMF recently warned that this market is still volatile and thin, as our IMF tokenized stocks report coverage explains.

Crypto prices were calm. At 14:17 UTC, CoinGecko showed ONDO at $0.506 (+4.0% over 24 hours) and a market cap near $2.46 billion. Bitcoin traded near $82,879 (-0.2%) and Ether near $2,535 (+1.4%). Note that ONDO is a governance token. It does not track the value of Ondo’s tokenized stocks.

Meanwhile, banks keep moving into custody and settlement. Earlier today we covered Standard Chartered’s RLUSD custody launch. We have also tracked tokenized stocks on Base passing $100 million in daily volume.

What to watch next

First, watch the DTCC go-live date and which chains carry it at launch. If it starts on time, Morgan Stanley loses its main reason to wait.

Second, watch whether Morgan Stanley names supported securities, chains or client types for its ATS. So far, crypto.news notes, it has published no final launch date and no list of eligible stocks.

Third, watch the January GENIUS Act start and any Fed guidance on bank permissibility. Oldenburg tied institutional comfort directly to those rules.

Finally, watch RWA.xyz’s tokenized-stock total. A move well past $3.34 billion before Q1 2027 would show demand building without the big banks.

Morgan Stanley tokenized equities FAQ

When will Morgan Stanley support tokenized equities?

Morgan Stanley now expects to support tokenized equities on its alternative trading system in Q1 2027. Amy Oldenburg told The Block on Oct. 12, 2026, that this is more realistic than the second-half 2026 timeline she gave in March. No exact date has been published.

Why did Morgan Stanley delay tokenized stock support?

Oldenburg said the bank needs tradable tokenized products before its ATS can support them, and client demand is weak because those products barely exist yet. She is also watching DTCC’s October tokenization launch and US rules such as the GENIUS Act.

How big is the tokenized stock market?

RWA.xyz showed about $3.34 billion in distributed tokenized stocks on Oct. 12, 2026, up about 17% in 30 days. Ondo, bStocks, xStocks and Securitize hold roughly 86% of that value.
