Quick answer: Zcash grants funding may be switched off. Co-founder Sean Bowe published a draft proposal on Oct. 26, 2026 to stop sending 8% of newly created ZEC to Zcash Community Grants and redirect it to a network reserve. He says ZCG already holds about $125 million. The change needs a network upgrade and has no date.
Zcash grants funding may soon stop flowing. Zcash co-founder Sean Bowe has proposed ending the automatic 8% share of newly created ZEC that goes to Zcash Community Grants (ZCG), arguing the program already holds about $125 million.
The draft would not touch money ZCG already has. Instead, it would send future coins to a reserve that pays miners later. Below, we look at the numbers and at what the debate means for ZEC holders.
What happened to Zcash grants funding?
Bowe published a draft Zcash Improvement Proposal (ZIP) late on Oct. 26, 2026. Afterward, he shared it on X. “ZCG has over $125M in funding, and will receive millions more before the spigot is turned off,” he wrote, as quoted by CoinDesk and Cointelegraph. “The program was never designed to handle this amount of funding.”
Under the plan, ZCG’s 8% slice of the block subsidy would go to the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM). The NSM holds ZEC out of circulation and slowly pays it back out through future block rewards. Notably, the redirect would last until the current funding period ends in 2028.
Meanwhile, a second program receives 12% of new ZEC. By contrast, holders vote on its grants every quarter. Bowe wants to keep that larger stream as it is.
Why does it matter?
The core issue is control. ZCG’s five-member committee is elected by a community advisory panel. Moreover, it picks grants without a separate coinholder vote. So a large, growing pot sits with a small group, and Bowe argues that extra custody adds risk.
Timing also plays a role. The draft landed during a row over a ZCG-funded outreach team called ZECsy. Specifically, it asked for $550,000 to demo private payments at events, including an adult-industry convention in New Jersey. According to CoinDesk, the committee approved startup funding and nine milestones worth about $461,500. Even so, one member, Hanh, voted against it. However, Bowe’s draft does not mention ZECsy at all. Instead, it rests only on reserves and inflows.
There is a wider pattern as well. In September, Dragonfly’s Haseeb Qureshi suggested ending the Zcash developer fund when its term runs out, warning it could become “politicized.” In short, the debate is about whether a mature network still needs automatic dev taxes. Similarly, Cardano faced a related question in its treasury vote on a copper reserve.
The data: inflow vs. spending
Here are the figures, with our own math at the live price.
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ZCG ZEC holdings | 91,453 ZEC | ZCG dashboard via CoinDesk |
| ZCG cash | $8.8 million | ZCG dashboard via CoinDesk |
| Outstanding grant commitments | $2.4 million | ZCG dashboard via CoinDesk |
| Daily inflow at target pace | about 144 ZEC | CoinDesk |
| Q1 program expenses | just over $1.5 million | Financial Privacy Foundation via CoinDesk |
| Dev fund lockbox | 72,351 ZEC | ZecStats via Cointelegraph |
ZEC traded at $1,261.20 at 13:57 UTC on Oct. 27, 2026, up 3.3% in 24 hours, per CoinGecko. Therefore, at that price, ZCG’s coins are worth about $115 million. Add the cash and subtract commitments, and the net pot is roughly $122 million. Bowe’s $125.3 million figure used $1,300 per coin.
Next, compare flows. At 144 ZEC a day, ZCG takes in about 52,560 ZEC a year. That is equal to roughly $66 million at today’s price. By contrast, annualized spending is near $6 million. In other words, inflow runs about 11 times faster than spending.
Even a sharp drop would not change the picture much. Bowe estimates that at $500 per ZEC, the existing pot would still cover about five years at $10 million a year.
What it means for ZEC holders
For holders, the change is mostly neutral on supply in the short term. After all, coins sent to the NSM are not burned. Instead, they are held back and paid to miners later. Still, fewer coins would reach a grant wallet that might sell them to cover costs. As a result, near-term sell pressure could ease slightly.
The bigger effect is governance. A cleaner funding model could help ZEC’s case with large investors. This matters especially after the NU7 mainnet upgrade and ZEC rally put the coin back in the spotlight. Privacy coins are also under fresh attention, as the recent Monero rally above $600 shows.
What to watch next
First, watch the community forum and the ZIP editors. So far, the draft has no activation date, and it needs a change to network rules. Second, look for ZCG’s reply. For example, the committee may offer to cut its share instead of ending it. Third, track whether miners and node teams back the plan. Until an upgrade ships, ZCG keeps receiving about 144 ZEC a day.
Zcash grants funding FAQ
What is Zcash Community Grants?
Zcash Community Grants (ZCG) is a program that funds independent Zcash projects. It receives 8% of newly created ZEC. A five-member committee, elected by a community advisory panel, chooses the grants.
Will Bowe’s proposal burn ZEC?
No. The proposal sends ZCG’s 8% share to the Network Sustainability Mechanism. That reserve holds ZEC out of circulation and pays it back to miners through future block rewards.
When could Zcash grants funding end?
There is no date yet. The draft ZIP needs community review and a network upgrade. Until it activates, ZCG keeps getting about 144 ZEC a day, and the current funding period runs until 2028.
