Quick answer: A stock perps flash crash hit memory-chip names at 21:22 UTC on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026. Micron and SK Hynix perps on Hyperliquid fell 6.5% and Western Digital 7.0% within about 10 minutes, per Hyperliquid’s public candle data, with no news and U.S. markets closed. By 05:00 UTC Sunday most had recovered to within 1% to 2%.
A stock perps flash crash ripped through memory-chip names on Saturday night while Wall Street was closed. At 21:22 UTC on Oct. 17, 2026, perpetual futures tracking Micron, SK Hynix, SanDisk and Western Digital started falling, and within about 10 minutes they were down 6% to 7%, according to one-minute candles from Hyperliquid’s public API.
There was no company news and no cash market to anchor prices. As a result, the move shows how thin weekend order books can turn one large sell order into a cascade.

How far did the stock perps fall?
We pulled one-minute data for the stock perps listed on trade.xyz, the builder-deployed market on Hyperliquid that runs 24/7 contracts on U.S. and Asian shares. The table compares the 21:20 UTC close with the lowest one-minute print and the mark price at about 05:00 UTC on Sunday, Oct. 18.
| Perp (trade.xyz) | 21:20 UTC | Low (time UTC) | Drop | Sunday 05:00 UTC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Micron (MU) | $873.81 | $816.79 (21:30) | -6.5% | $864.77 (-1.0%) |
| SK Hynix (SKHX) | $914.26 | $854.69 (21:29) | -6.5% | $901.73 (-1.4%) |
| SanDisk (SNDK) | $1,293.40 | $1,214.90 (21:28) | -6.1% | $1,272.40 (-1.6%) |
| Western Digital (WDC) | $321.05 | $298.44 (21:32) | -7.0% | $317.03 (-1.3%) |
| Samsung (SMSN) | $156.25 | $146.51 (21:30) | -6.2% | $154.65 (-1.0%) |
| DRAM basket | $46.32 | $43.96 (21:27) | -5.1% | $45.84 (-1.0%) |
The damage stayed inside memory. Nvidia’s perp fell only 1.1%, the XYZ100 index perp 0.8% and the S&P 500 perp 0.4%. Bitcoin dipped 1.0% to $80,766 at 21:39 UTC, and Ether fell 2.8% to $2,353.60.
What caused the stock perps flash crash?
No headline explains it. Instead, a minute-by-minute breakdown posted on X by trader @davidyjeong says the selling started on Binance, where SanDisk perps printed a $407,000 seller-initiated trade at 21:21:59 UTC and $1.03 million the next second. Under one second later, about ten Hyperliquid addresses fired fast “immediate-or-cancel” sell orders across SNDK, SOXL, DRAM, SKHX, SKHY and MU, all opening new shorts, the analysis says.
Our own data also matches its volume figures. SanDisk perps on trade.xyz traded $3.14 million in the 21:22 minute, but Micron traded only $0.31 million. However, Micron volume then jumped to $10.85 million at 21:28 and $9.54 million at 21:30, when the lows printed. That pattern fits forced selling from liquidated long positions rather than fresh news.
In total, about $86.6 million changed hands across eight memory-chip perps on trade.xyz between 21:21 and 21:32 UTC.
Why are weekend stock perps so fragile?
Stock perps let traders bet on shares with leverage around the clock. On trade.xyz, most of these markets allow up to 10x leverage, and the DRAM basket allows 20x. With no live stock price on a Saturday, the contracts trade on their own order books, so a big order can push price far before arbitrage traders step in.
Meanwhile, open interest is large for such a quiet session. At 05:00 UTC Sunday, SK Hynix perps held about $374 million in open positions, SK Hynix’s second listing (SKHY) $189 million, Micron $158 million and SanDisk $130 million, per Hyperliquid’s market data. We covered the same leverage risk when Pump.fun perps went live on Hyperliquid and when Binance bStocks passed $1 billion.
What does the flash crash mean for traders?
In short, weekend perp prices are not a reliable preview of Monday’s open. For example, these perps recovered most of the wick within an hour.
- Leverage and stops: tight stop-losses on weekend stock perps can be hit by a move that reverses minutes later.
- Crypto spillover: Bitcoin and Ether moved far less, so this was a stock-perp liquidity event, not a crypto selloff like the Oct. 15 drop below $80,000.
- Monday test: if Micron and SK Hynix open near Sunday’s perp prices, the wick was pure noise. A big gap would show the perps were early.
Therefore, expect the debate over tokenized and synthetic stocks to grow.
Stock Perps Flash Crash FAQ
What is a stock perp?
A stock perp is a perpetual futures contract that tracks a company’s share price with no expiry date. Platforms such as trade.xyz on Hyperliquid and Binance list them 24/7, so they keep trading when U.S. stock markets are closed.
When did the stock perps flash crash happen?
It started at about 21:22 UTC on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026. Micron, SK Hynix, SanDisk and Western Digital perps hit their lows between 21:28 and 21:32 UTC, per Hyperliquid one-minute data.
Did Micron stock actually fall 6.5%?
No. Only the perpetual futures fell. Micron’s real shares did not trade on Saturday, and the perp was back within 1.0% of its pre-crash price by 05:00 UTC on Sunday, Oct. 18.
Did the stock perps flash crash hit Bitcoin?
Only slightly. Bitcoin fell 1.0% to $80,766 at 21:39 UTC and Ether fell 2.8%, per Hyperliquid data, both far smaller than the 6% to 7% drops in memory-chip perps.
Not financial advice. Leveraged perpetual futures can wipe out a position in minutes. DYOR.
