Quick answer: Tether excess reserves reached $7.95 billion on Sept. 30, 2026, per the Q3 attestation published Oct. 30, up from $4.1 billion in June, on $1.5 billion of quarterly profit. However, bitcoin and gold have fallen since Sept. 30, which by CryptoVank’s estimate trims roughly $1.9 billion from that buffer at current prices.
Tether excess reserves nearly doubled to $7.95 billion at the end of September, according to the stablecoin issuer’s third-quarter attestation released on Oct. 30, 2026. Yet the two volatile assets behind that jump, bitcoin and gold, have both fallen sharply since then.
What Tether reported for Q3 2026
Tether published the report on Friday. BDO, an independent accounting firm, prepared it, and it covers balances as of Sept. 30, 2026.
For example, the headline numbers are simple. Tether held $191.45 billion in total assets against $183.50 billion in liabilities. Almost all of those liabilities, $183.47 billion, are USDT and other tokens in circulation. As a result, assets exceeded liabilities by $7.95 billion.
By comparison, that buffer stood at $4.11 billion on June 30. So it grew by about $3.8 billion in one quarter.
Profit also held steady. Tether reported $1.5 billion of net operating profit in Q3, the same as in Q2. For the first nine months of 2026, it reported $4.5 billion. U.S. Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements provided most of that income.
“Our responsibility is to make sure USD₮ remains dependable when people need it most, including when markets and financial systems come under pressure,” CEO Paolo Ardoino said in the release.
Where the reserves backing USDT sit
The reserve report splits the $191.45 billion into several buckets. Securities.io listed the main ones:
| Asset | Value at Sept. 30, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Cash, T-bills, repo and deposits | $139.58B |
| Precious metals (gold bars) | $19.08B |
| Secured loans | $14.18B |
| Bitcoin | $8.37B |
| Other investments | $6.00B |
| Public equities | $4.18B |
Direct and indirect T-bill holdings total $132.4 billion. For scale, Cointelegraph notes that South Korea held $134.2 billion of U.S. government debt in August, per Treasury data.
Meanwhile, the bitcoin line grew from about $5.8 billion at the end of June, Cointelegraph reported. The report values bitcoin at $83,621.23 and gold at $4,157.41 per ounce, both Bloomberg closing prices on Sept. 30.

Why Tether excess reserves matter now
Tether excess reserves are the cushion between what the company owns and what it owes to USDT holders. Therefore, they are the number to watch when markets turn.
And markets have turned. At 19:54 UTC on Oct. 30, CoinGecko showed bitcoin at $76,692, down 5.1% in 24 hours. That is 8.3% below the price Tether used on Sept. 30. Our report on bitcoin’s worst October since 2014 covers that slide.
At the same time, gold has dropped. Cointelegraph reported that gold fell to its lowest level in a year on Friday. Gold futures traded at $3,885 at 19:32 UTC, per Yahoo Finance data, or 6.6% below Tether’s valuation price.
Here is our rough math. Tether’s $8.37 billion of bitcoin implies about 100,060 BTC. At $76,692, that stack is worth about $7.67 billion, roughly $0.69 billion less. Similarly, the $19.08 billion gold position would be worth about $17.83 billion at the futures price, a drop of about $1.25 billion.
Together, that is about $1.9 billion. In other words, Tether excess reserves would be closer to $6 billion at today’s prices, if nothing else changed.
Of course, other things change. Tether earns roughly $0.5 billion a month at its current profit pace, which offsets part of the drop. It may also have bought or sold assets since Sept. 30. Still, the exercise shows how much the buffer depends on two volatile assets.
Tether excess reserves in context
The Q3 swing is not new. In fact, the figure has moved by about $4 billion in each of the last two quarters. It hit a record $8.23 billion on March 31, fell to $4.11 billion on June 30, and then rebounded.
By contrast, USDT supply has barely moved through all of this. Tether says issuance held near $184 billion across the first three quarters. CoinGecko currently puts USDT’s market cap at $180.3 billion. DefiLlama data shows USDT at about 60% of a $300.3 billion stablecoin market.
There are caveats, too. BDO’s opinion covers the report’s totals only, not its notes, according to Securities.io. Also, the report is not a full set of financial statements. According to the report, shareholders approved Tether’s audited 2025 statements on Aug. 13, 2026, and those statements changed the opening equity figure. However, the audited statements have not been made public, Cointelegraph noted.

What to watch next
First, watch the next report. If Tether keeps its quarterly schedule, the Q4 attestation will show whether the October losses stuck.
Second, watch interest rates. Because most of Tether’s profit comes from T-bills, lower U.S. rates would shrink its main income source.
Finally, watch redemptions. Meanwhile, the Binance hack has rattled traders this week. A wave of USDT redemptions would test the liquid part of the reserves, which is still the large majority.
Tether excess reserves FAQ
What are Tether’s excess reserves?
Excess reserves are the amount by which Tether’s assets exceed its liabilities. On Sept. 30, 2026, Tether reported $191.45 billion of assets and $183.50 billion of liabilities, so the buffer was $7.95 billion, per its BDO attestation.
How much profit did Tether make in Q3 2026?
Tether reported $1.5 billion of net operating profit in Q3 2026, matching Q2. It reported $4.5 billion for the first nine months of the year, mostly from U.S. Treasury bills and repo agreements.
Is USDT still fully backed after the October crypto drop?
Based on the Sept. 30 report, yes, with a $7.95 billion surplus. CryptoVank estimates that bitcoin and gold price drops since then reduce that surplus by about $1.9 billion. That still leaves an estimated buffer of about $6 billion, before any new profit or trades.
