Quick answer: The Mt. Gox repayment deadline is now Oct. 31, 2027, after trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi moved it from Oct. 31, 2026, with court permission, in a notice dated Oct. 16, 2026. Two estate-linked wallets still hold about 34,358 BTC, worth roughly $2.8 billion at CoinGecko prices on Oct. 20.
The Mt. Gox repayment deadline has moved again, this time to Oct. 31, 2027. The trustee of the failed bitcoin exchange says payouts are largely done for creditors with clean paperwork, but many others are still waiting, and about 34,358 BTC remains in estate-linked wallets.
What happened
Mt. Gox rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi published a two-page notice dated Oct. 16, 2026. With the permission of the Tokyo court, he moved the deadline for the base, early lump-sum and intermediate repayments from Oct. 31, 2026, to Oct. 31, 2027 (Japan time).
The notice gives two reasons. First, “many” creditors have not completed the steps needed to get paid. Second, “a considerable number” hit problems during the payout process. For everyone else, the trustee says repayments are “largely completed”, except for “certain types” that he does not name.
The notice does not say how many creditors are still waiting. It also does not say how much bitcoin is still owed. Cointelegraph and Finbold both reported the extension on Oct. 20.
A deadline that keeps moving
This is now a familiar pattern. The original date was Oct. 31, 2023. The trustee pushed it to 2024 in a Sept. 21, 2023 notice, then to 2025 on Oct. 10, 2024, and to 2026 on Oct. 27, 2025.

So the Mt. Gox repayment deadline has slipped by one year four times in a row. The wording of the last three notices is almost identical. In other words, the estate is no longer stuck on the big payout. Instead, it is chasing a long tail of creditors who are hard to pay.
Actual payouts did happen. Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash repayments started in July 2024. By March 27, 2025, the trustee said more than 19,500 creditors had been repaid in BTC and BCH.

Trackers do not agree on the estate’s balance. Arkham put Mt. Gox-labeled wallets at 34,387.51 BTC on Sept. 30, as Finbold noted. Meanwhile, an analysis by NodeWitness found that a Glassnode series shows only about 24,052 BTC.
We pulled the two addresses that public trackers attribute to the estate from mempool.space at 10:51 UTC on Oct. 20, 2026 (block 972,307):
| Address (start) | Funded | BTC balance | Ever spent? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1N7jWm… | Dec. 5, 2024 | 24,051.76 | No |
| 14FEEM… | June 2, 2026 | 10,306.35 | No |
| Total | 34,358.11 |
That total sits within 30 BTC of Arkham’s figure. It also suggests the Glassnode number may be missing the newer June wallet. However, the trustee does not publish addresses, so the attribution comes from analytics firms, not from Mt. Gox itself.
At CoinGecko’s price of $81,488 at 10:51 UTC on Oct. 20, 2026, those 34,358 BTC are worth about $2.8 billion. Bitcoin was down 1.1% over 24 hours.
Why it matters for the bitcoin market
For traders, the main fear has always been supply. Creditors who bought BTC for a few hundred dollars might sell once coins land in their accounts. A fixed date tends to concentrate that fear, so a later deadline spreads it out.
Still, the overhang is smaller than it looks. For scale, US spot bitcoin ETFs took in about $527 million on Oct. 19, per Cointelegraph. CoinDesk puts BlackRock’s IBIT alone at $665.2 million that day, citing SoSoValue. At that pace, the whole remaining estate equals a little over five days of ETF demand.
Also, the coins are not all owed to sellers. Some creditors have held their repaid BTC. Others chose cash payouts from sales. As a result, any move from these wallets is a signal to watch, not proof of selling.
What to watch next
- Wallet movements. Neither address has ever sent coins out. A transfer to an exchange wallet would be the first real sign of new payouts. Our dormant Bitcoin whale breakdown shows how we track these moves.
- Trustee notices. Each payout round so far came with a short notice on the trustee’s site. Creditors should only trust mtgox.com, claims.mtgox.com and material.mtgox.com, since the trustee keeps warning about fake sites.
- October price action. BTC needs a strong close to avoid a second red October, as we covered in our Bitcoin October returns analysis.
The Mt. Gox name is also back in the news for other reasons. Former CEO Mark Karpelès recently clashed publicly with Ledger’s chief, as our Ledger theft report explains.
Mt. Gox repayment FAQ
What is the new Mt. Gox repayment deadline?
The deadline for base, early lump-sum and intermediate repayments is now Oct. 31, 2027 (Japan time). Trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi moved it from Oct. 31, 2026, with court permission, in a notice dated Oct. 16, 2026.
Why was the Mt. Gox repayment delayed again?
The trustee says many creditors have not completed the procedures needed to receive payment, and a considerable number ran into problems during the payout process. Payouts to creditors without such issues are described as largely complete.
How much bitcoin does Mt. Gox still hold?
Two estate-linked addresses held 34,358.11 BTC at block 972,307 on Oct. 20, 2026, per mempool.space data checked by CryptoVank. That is close to Arkham’s Sept. 30 figure of 34,387.51 BTC, or roughly $2.8 billion at current prices.
