Quick answer: Sparkasse Bitcoin trading went live on Oct. 19, 2026, per the German Savings Banks Association (DSGV) and DekaBank. Customers of the first five participating Sparkassen can buy BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL and POL in the bank’s app for €0.99 per order plus a spread of about 1.3%, but cannot withdraw to their own wallet.
Sparkasse Bitcoin trading is finally real. On Monday, Oct. 19, 2026, the first customers of Germany’s public savings banks started buying and selling crypto directly in the bank’s own app, the German Savings Banks Association (DSGV) told dpa. The product, called “Krypto – powered by Deka”, is run by DekaBank, the group’s securities house, Bloomberg reported at 11:28 UTC.
It is a sharp U-turn. About four years ago, the group’s own committees advised against offering crypto at all. Now one of Europe’s largest retail banking networks is wiring Bitcoin into everyday banking, with some clear limits.
What can Sparkasse customers buy?
At launch there are five coins: Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana and Polygon’s POL token. You can follow live prices on our Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP and Solana pages.
The service sits in the “Anlegen” (investing) section of the App Sparkasse, and a securities account is not required, per DAS INVESTMENT. Your contract partner is DekaBank, not your local branch. There is no minimum order, and the maximum is €250,000 per order, according to an analysis of DekaBank’s terms by Cryptocodes.
Which Sparkassen offer crypto trading now?
Only a handful so far. On Oct. 19, DekaBank’s list showed five of the 339 Sparkassen: Frankfurter Sparkasse, Taunus Sparkasse, Sparkasse Karlsruhe, Sparkasse Rottal-Inn and Niederrheinische Sparkasse RheinLippe, per Cryptocodes.
Each savings bank is legally independent and decides for itself. “When a savings bank starts is for it to decide,” DSGV board member Joachim Schmalzl told dpa. The association expects 30 to 40 more banks to join every month and wants a large share connected in the first half of 2027. The group serves about 50 million customers, according to Web3 Business News.
How much does it cost to buy Bitcoin at Sparkasse?
The headline fee is €0.99 per buy or sell, and custody is free. However, DekaBank adds a spread it does not state as a number. Cryptocodes compared 560 early trades from Sept. 21 to Oct. 16 with Bitstamp prices and found bitcoin was bought about 1.34% above market and sold about 1.35% below it.

So small buys are expensive. On a €100 purchase, the fee and markup together come to about €2.31, or 2.3%. On €1,000, it drops to about 1.4%. That is cheaper than many bank products, but pricier than most order-book exchanges.
What is the catch?
The coins never really leave the bank. DekaBank holds them in a pooled wallet with Börse Stuttgart, per Bitcoin.com News. Transfers go only to four approved providers, not to your own hardware wallet. You also cannot deposit coins from elsewhere, stake them or claim airdrops.
Crypto is not covered by Germany’s deposit guarantee either. The coins are kept apart from the bank’s own assets, though. The DSGV itself calls crypto “highly speculative” and warns customers of possible total loss. The offer is also limited to adults who live only in Germany.
Why does this matter for the crypto market?
The real story is distribution. Under the EU’s MiCA rules, DekaBank was notified as a crypto service provider in December 2025 and cleared to exchange crypto for cash on June 25, 2026, per Bitcoin.com News. That legal clarity is exactly what the DSGV cited for its change of heart.
It also fits a wider pattern. Neobanks like N26, Trade Republic and Revolut already offer crypto, and cooperative Volksbanken joined earlier. In the U.S., Schwab opened Bitcoin and Ether trading to clients, and JPMorgan moved JPM Coin to Ethereum. Mainstream banks are now competing for the next wave of buyers.
In the short term, five banks will not move Bitcoin’s price. But if hundreds of savings banks switch on by mid-2027, that is a steady new on-ramp for cautious savers. Those buyers may hold for the long term rather than trade.
Sparkasse Bitcoin FAQ
Can I buy Bitcoin at my Sparkasse today?
Only if your Sparkasse is one of the participating banks. On Oct. 19, 2026, five of 339 had switched on, and the DSGV expects 30 to 40 more each month. You must be 18 and live only in Germany.
What are the Sparkasse crypto fees?
Each order costs €0.99, and custody is free. DekaBank also charges an unstated spread, which Cryptocodes measured at about 1.34% above market when buying Bitcoin.
Can I move my Bitcoin from Sparkasse to my own wallet?
No. Withdrawals are allowed only to four approved crypto companies, and DekaBank keeps the private keys. If you want self-custody, use an exchange that allows withdrawals and a genuine hardware wallet.
Is Sparkasse crypto protected by the deposit guarantee?
No. Crypto held through DekaBank is not covered by Germany’s statutory deposit guarantee, although it is kept separate from the bank’s own assets.
How are Sparkasse crypto gains taxed?
DekaBank does not withhold tax but reports transactions to Germany’s federal tax office. Read our crypto tax basics for how gains are usually calculated.
Not financial advice. Crypto is volatile and you can lose your whole stake. Always DYOR.
