Quick answer: DTCC tokenization went live on Oct. 28, 2026. The service lets 20 signed-up firms, including JPMorgan, Citi and Fidelity, turn 34 DTC-held US stocks, ETFs and Treasuries (about $30 trillion in value) into tokens that move 24/7 on Canton and DTCC’s private Besu chain, per DTCC and CoinDesk.
DTCC tokenization is no longer a pilot. On Oct. 28, 2026, the Depository Trust Company, the DTCC unit that holds more than $114 trillion in US securities, switched on its Tokenization Service for real clients, according to a DTCC press release and a notice to participants.
The core of US market plumbing now issues blockchain tokens backed one-for-one by real shares and bonds. Here is what went live, who can use it, and why it matters for crypto.
What did DTCC launch on Oct. 28, 2026?
The DTCC Tokenization Service (DTS) lets eligible DTC participants convert securities they already hold at DTC into tokenized form and send them to approved digital wallets. DTCC calls these tokens “digital twins.” As a result, they keep the same ownership rights, investor protections and economic entitlements as the original securities.
At launch, 34 securities are eligible. They include select large-cap Russell 1000 stocks, ETFs tracking major indices, and US Treasury bills, notes and bonds. A DTCC spokesperson told CoinDesk that these represent about $30 trillion in market value. That is up from the 25 securities listed in the overview we covered in our Oct. 16 DTCC explainer.
Which banks and brokers signed up?
DTCC says 20 participants have signed agreements to access the service:
- Banks: J.P. Morgan, Citi, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, Barclays, BNP Paribas, UBS, State Street, Brown Brothers Harriman
- Brokers and market makers: Citadel Securities, Fidelity Investments, Edward Jones, Marex, Mirae Asset Securities (USA), Clear Street, Velocity Capital
- Fintech and clearing firms: Alpaca, Apex Clearing, DriveWealth, Interchange Clearing
More firms will be onboarded on a rolling basis. A wider group of partners also backs the launch, including BitGo, Fireblocks, Ondo, Matter Labs, Talos, Tradeweb, Virtu and DRW.
How does DTCC tokenization work?
Conversion orders run Monday to Friday, 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET, and DTCC targets processing times of 15 minutes or less, per CoinDesk. After that, tokens can move between allow-listed wallets 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Meanwhile, two networks are live today: the public-permissioned Canton Network and DTCC’s own private Besu chain, an Ethereum-compatible client. DTC still keeps the official ownership record, which separates these tokens from synthetic “stock tokens” that only track a share price.
| Detail | At launch (Oct. 28, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Eligible securities | 34 (stocks, ETFs, Treasuries) |
| Approx. market value | $30 trillion |
| Signed participants | 20 |
| Networks | Canton, DTCC Besu |
| Token transfers | 24/7 between approved wallets |
| Next networks | Stellar and Circle’s Arc (2027) |
Why does this matter for crypto markets?
First, it settles the “if” question. The Securities and Exchange Commission gave DTC a no-action letter in December 2025, and DTCC plus more than 30 firms ran limited live trades about seven months later. Now the service is in production. “Today marks the culmination of years of work,” DTCC President and CEO Frank La Salla said in the release.
Second, it pulls real-world assets (RWA) toward public chains. CoinDesk reports DTCC’s roadmap adds Stellar and Circle’s Arc in 2027, plus tools to settle trades with digital cash and to use tokenized securities as collateral. That points to a bigger role for stablecoins as the cash leg of tokenized markets.
Third, competition is heating up. Banks are moving their own money on-chain, as with JPMorgan’s deposit token on Ethereum, while exchanges push tokenized stocks, a plan that drew 22 company objections at OKXICE. Citi analysts project tokenized securities could reach $5.5 trillion by 2030, per CoinDesk.
What are the limits for now?
However, retail investors cannot mint DTCC tokens directly. Only DTC participants can, and wallets must be approved. In addition, 34 securities is a tiny slice of DTC’s book. Finally, public-chain support is still a 2027 plan, so a direct boost to Ethereum or other public networks is not here yet.
DTCC Tokenization FAQ
Is the DTCC Tokenization Service live?
Yes. DTCC said its Tokenization Service went live on Oct. 28, 2026, run by its Depository Trust Company subsidiary, with 34 eligible securities and 20 signed participants at launch.
What blockchains does DTCC tokenization use?
At launch, the service runs on the Canton Network and DTCC’s private Besu network. CoinDesk reports Stellar and Circle’s Arc blockchain are planned for 2027.
Can retail investors buy DTCC tokenized stocks?
Not directly. Only eligible DTC participants, such as banks and brokers, can convert securities, and tokens move only between approved wallets. Retail access would come through those firms if they choose to offer it.
Are DTCC tokens the same as stock tokens on crypto exchanges?
No. DTCC tokens are backed one-for-one by securities held at DTC and keep the same legal rights. Many exchange stock tokens are synthetic and only track the price.
