Quick answer: On Oct. 16, 2026, DTCC said its Tokenization Service will make about $30 trillion of DTC-held assets eligible for tokenization. It launches in October 2026 with 25 securities on the Canton Network and DTCC’s private Besu network, with Stellar and Circle’s Arc planned for 2027, per DTCC’s at-a-glance overview.

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) has laid out exactly what its Tokenization Service will do when it goes live this month. In an at-a-glance overview shared on X on Oct. 16, 2026, at 17:17 UTC, the firm said about $30 trillion in assets will be eligible for tokenization, starting with 25 securities.

That is a big number from the company that sits under most U.S. stock and bond settlement. Still, the first phase is narrow and closed to the public, so the details matter more than the headline.

What is the DTCC Tokenization Service?

The service turns securities held at The Depository Trust Company (DTC) into blockchain tokens, often called digital twins. Each token is backed 1:1 by a security in DTC custody. It keeps the same CUSIP identifier, rights and investor protections as the regular book-entry version, and DTC’s official books and records stay in place, according to DTCC.

DTCC ran a production test on July 15, 2026, when tokenized DTC assets were used in real trades by more than 30 firms, per its July press release. That test came seven months after DTC received a No-Action Letter from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission allowing the service.

What launches in October 2026?

The day-one scope, per DTCC’s overview:

  • 25 securities from three asset classes: select large-cap Russell 1000 stocks, select ETFs, and U.S. Treasury bills, notes and bonds.
  • Two networks: the public Canton Network (CIP-56 token standard) and DTCC’s private Hyperledger Besu network (ERC-20).
  • Conversions through a web interface or API from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET on business days, targeting 15 minutes or less.
  • 24/7 peer-to-peer transfers between DTC-registered wallets on the same network.
  • Compliance-enabled tokens with transfer restrictions, and on-chain Treasury servicing with payments in fiat.

DTCC has said October 2026 for launch. Digital Asset CEO Yuval Rooz has pointed to the end of the month, according to CantonNews.

How big is $30 trillion in context?

DTC holds more than $114 trillion in assets, so the eligible pool is roughly a quarter of it, CantonNews noted. By comparison, our coverage of Binance bStocks reaching $1 billion shows how small today’s tokenized stock market still is. However, “eligible” does not mean “tokenized.” Only 25 names convert at first, and only DTC participants can use the service.

Which blockchains come next?

DTCC lists Stellar (SEP-41 standard) and Circle’s Arc (ERC-20) as anticipated in 2027, plus more layer-1 and layer-2 networks “aligned with client and market demand.” DTCC is one of Arc’s founding validators, per CantonNews, which also links the service to Circle’s stablecoin plans. Readers comparing the two big dollar tokens can see our USDT vs USDC guide.

The 2027 roadmap also adds more eligible securities, single sign-on and maker-checker controls, corporate-action servicing for stocks and ETFs, and a consolidated stock record. The most important item is settlement and collateral, including on-chain netting and digital cash. DTCC says the roadmap is indicative and subject to its SEC No-Action Letter.

What does this mean for crypto markets?

Tokenized real-world assets are becoming a core Wall Street project, not a side experiment. In addition, round-the-clock transfers could let firms move Treasuries as collateral over weekends, something traditional markets cannot do today.

There are caveats. Morgan Stanley recently pushed its tokenized equities to Q1 2027, and the IMF found that tokenized stocks swing about 1.5x harder than their listed versions. Meanwhile, brokers keep adding direct coin access, as Schwab Crypto’s full rollout showed this week. Projects tied to tokenization, such as Canton, Stellar and RWA tokens, may see attention, but DTCC’s service does not involve buying any crypto token.

DTCC Tokenization Service FAQ

When does the DTCC Tokenization Service launch?

DTCC says the service launches in October 2026. Digital Asset CEO Yuval Rooz has pointed to the end of October, according to CantonNews. The scope was published on Oct. 16, 2026.

Which blockchains does the DTCC Tokenization Service use?

At launch it runs on the public Canton Network and DTCC’s private Hyperledger Besu network. Stellar and Circle’s Arc are anticipated in 2027, with more networks added based on client and market demand, per DTCC.

Can retail investors buy DTCC tokenized stocks?

Not directly. The service is for DTC participants such as banks and brokers, and transfers run only between DTC-registered wallets. Any retail access would come later through those firms’ own products.

Are DTCC tokens the same as the original securities?

Yes, in rights. Each token is backed 1:1 by a security held at DTC, keeps the same CUSIP, rights and investor protections, and DTC remains the official record-keeper, according to DTCC’s overview.
